Skin booster aftercare
Simple aftercare advice for the first few days after a skin booster treatment, including what to avoid and what side effects are normal.
Good aftercare helps your skin settle quickly after a skin booster treatment. It also lowers the chance of infection or extra bruising. The good news is that it is all fairly simple.
This is the general advice I give clients after Profhilo, polynucleotides, Jalupro Super Hydro or Seventy Hyal. I will always give you personal instructions on the day too, so follow those if they differ.
What to expect straight after
Straight after treatment you will probably see small raised bumps where the product went in. This is normal, especially with Profhilo. The bumps usually go down within a few hours to a day as the product spreads through the skin.
You may also notice:
- Mild redness or swelling
- Tenderness when you touch the area
- Small bruises at the injection points
- Some puffiness under the eyes after Nucleofill
Most of this settles within a day or two. Bruising can take up to a week to fade fully for some people.
The first 24 hours
For the first day, try to keep things gentle:
- Keep your hands off the area and avoid rubbing or massaging it
- Skip makeup for at least 12 hours so the tiny injection points can close
- Avoid strenuous exercise as raised heart rate can increase swelling
- Avoid alcohol as it can make bruising worse
- Sleep on your back with your head slightly raised if you can
The first few days
For around two days after treatment it is best to avoid saunas, steam rooms, hot baths and very hot showers. Heat can increase swelling. Keep out of strong sun too and wear a broad spectrum SPF every day.
Avoid swimming pools for a couple of days, as chlorinated water can irritate fresh injection points.
The first two weeks
Hold off on other skin treatments for about two weeks. This includes facials, chemical peels, microneedling and laser treatments. It is also wise to pause strong active skincare such as retinoids and acids for a few days. You can go back to your usual routine once the skin feels calm.
Looking after the skin day to day
Use a gentle cleanser and a simple moisturiser while the skin settles. Drinking plenty of water and getting good sleep helps your skin in general. Neither will make or break the result, but they do support healthy skin.
When to get in touch
Serious problems after skin boosters are uncommon, but it is important to know the signs. Please contact me straight away if you notice any of the following:
- Pain that is getting worse rather than better
- Swelling that keeps increasing after the first couple of days
- Skin that turns pale, blotchy or dusky in colour
- Heat, spreading redness or pus, which could suggest infection
- Fever or feeling generally unwell
If you are ever unsure, it is always better to ask. I would much rather hear from you about something small than have you worry at home.
Your next session
Most skin boosters work as a course. I will book your next session at the right interval for your product and check how your skin has responded before we carry on.
If you are thinking about skin boosters and would like to understand the aftercare before deciding, book a free 15-minute consultation with me in Addlestone. I am always happy to talk it through.
