A skincare routine that protects your results
A simple daily skincare routine to support and protect the results of skin boosters, dermal filler and anti-wrinkle treatment for longer.
Aesthetic treatments can make a lovely difference to your skin. What you do at home every day has a big effect on how long that difference lasts. A good routine does not need to be complicated or expensive. It just needs to be consistent.
Here is the simple routine I recommend to most of my clients.
Morning routine
1. Gentle cleanser
Use a mild cleanser that leaves your skin feeling comfortable rather than tight. If your skin is dry, a cream or milk cleanser is often kinder than a foaming one.
2. Antioxidant serum
A vitamin C serum can help protect against everyday damage from pollution and UV. It may also help brighten skin tone over time. Start with a lower strength if your skin is sensitive.
3. Moisturiser
Look for ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin and ceramides. These help skin hold water and support its natural barrier.
4. Sun protection
This is the single most important step. Use a broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher every day, all year round. UV light breaks down collagen and is one of the main causes of skin ageing. Take it down onto your neck and chest too.
Evening routine
1. Cleanse well
Remove makeup and sunscreen properly. Some people like to cleanse twice in the evening.
2. Retinoid
Retinoids are among the best studied skincare ingredients for fine lines and texture. Start slowly, perhaps two or three nights a week. Then build up gradually. Retinoids are not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
3. Moisturiser
A slightly richer moisturiser at night can help, especially in colder months.
Around your treatments
Strong active ingredients can irritate freshly treated skin. As a general guide:
- Pause retinoids and exfoliating acids for a few days before and after injectable treatments
- Avoid makeup for around 12 hours after skin boosters
- Avoid facials, peels and laser treatments for about two weeks after injections
- Go back to your usual routine once your skin feels calm
I will give you personal aftercare advice on the day, so follow that if it differs.
Habits that help
Skincare is only part of the picture. These everyday habits also make a difference:
- Not smoking, as it speeds up collagen loss
- Getting enough sleep
- Eating a balanced diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables
- Drinking alcohol in moderation
- Wearing sunglasses and a hat on bright days
Keep it simple
It can be tempting to buy lots of products. Using too many at once can actually irritate skin and make it harder to tell what is working. A short routine you stick with will usually do more good than a long one you forget.
Everyone's skin is different and results from any routine vary. If you are unsure what suits your skin, I am happy to give you some guidance.
