Skin boosters in your forties and fifties
How skin changes in your forties and fifties and how skin boosters can support hydration, texture and firmness as part of a sensible plan.
Many of the people who come to see me about skin boosters are in their forties and fifties. This is often when skin starts to feel different. It may be drier, a little less firm and slower to bounce back after a late night.
These changes are completely normal. Skin boosters are one way to support your skin through them, alongside good skincare and healthy habits.
How skin changes at this age
From our mid-twenties we gradually make less collagen each year. By our forties and fifties this becomes more noticeable. For women, the years around the menopause can bring a faster drop in collagen as oestrogen levels fall. You might notice:
- Drier skin that does not hold moisture as well
- Fine lines and crepey texture, especially around the eyes and neck
- Some loss of firmness along the jaw and cheeks
- A duller tone and less natural glow
- Skin that takes longer to heal
Where skin boosters fit in
Skin boosters work on the quality of the skin itself. They hydrate and help the skin repair and renew. They do not change your features or add volume. For many people in this age group that is exactly what they want: fresher, healthier skin that still looks like them.
Profhilo
Profhilo is a popular choice for skin that has become a little lax and dry. It is usually two sessions four weeks apart and can be used on the face or neck.
Polynucleotides
Plenhyage XL Strong may suit thinner skin with fine lines and uneven texture. Nucleofill is designed for the delicate under-eye area. Both usually involve a course of several sessions a few weeks apart.
Jalupro Super Hydro and Seventy Hyal
These focus on hydration. Jalupro Super Hydro also contains amino acids and peptides to support firmness. Each is usually given as two to three sessions a few weeks apart.
Combining treatments
Some people in their forties and fifties benefit from a combination of treatments over time. Skin boosters improve skin quality. Dermal filler can restore lost volume in areas like the cheeks. Anti-wrinkle treatment is a prescription-only medicine that can soften lines caused by movement. Whether any of these are suitable is decided at a face-to-face consultation with a prescriber.
I always prefer to start gently. Often improving skin quality first makes a noticeable difference on its own.
Health considerations
As we get older we are more likely to take regular medication or have health conditions. Blood thinners, autoimmune conditions and some other medicines can affect whether a treatment is suitable. I will ask about your medical history at your consultation so we can make a safe plan.
Realistic expectations
Skin boosters can make skin look smoother, brighter and more hydrated. Results build over several weeks and vary from person to person. Common side effects include redness, small bumps, swelling and bruising, which usually settle within a few days.
