Questions to ask before choosing a filler practitioner

Choosing who treats your face is a big decision, so here are the questions worth asking any practitioner before you book dermal filler.

Dermal filler is a medical treatment. In the UK the rules around who can offer it are still catching up, so it is up to you to check that you are in safe hands.

Here are the questions I would encourage anyone to ask before booking filler with any practitioner, including me.

Are you qualified and insured

Ask what training your practitioner has completed and whether they hold insurance for the treatment you want. A good practitioner will be happy to tell you. If someone avoids the question, that is a warning sign.

What product will you use

You have every right to know exactly what is going into your face. Ask for the brand name and whether it is a hyaluronic acid filler. Reputable products can be dissolved if needed. Your practitioner should be able to show you the box or syringe label.

Will I have a proper consultation

A consultation should come before any treatment. It should cover:

  • Your medical history and any medicines you take
  • What you would like to change and why
  • Whether filler is the right option for you
  • Risks and side effects explained in plain words
  • Realistic expectations of the result

You should never feel pressured to book on the spot. Time to think is a sign of a responsible practitioner.

What are the risks

Every filler treatment carries some risk. Swelling, tenderness and bruising are common. Rarer problems include infection, lumps and blood vessel complications. A good practitioner will talk about these honestly rather than brushing them aside.

What happens if something goes wrong

This is one of the most important questions. Ask:

  • Do you know how to recognise and manage complications
  • Do you have access to hyaluronidase through a prescriber
  • How can I contact you after treatment
  • Will you see me again if I have a concern

Where will the treatment take place

Treatment should be done in a clean, professional setting. Be cautious of filler offered at parties or in places where hygiene cannot be controlled.

Can I see examples of your work

Before and after photos can give you a sense of a practitioner's style. Look for results that look natural and suit the person's face. Remember that results vary and photos only show part of the picture.

Will you tell me if I do not need treatment

A trustworthy practitioner will sometimes say no. They may suggest a smaller amount, a different treatment or nothing at all. This honesty is a good sign that they care about your face rather than a sale.

Trust your instincts

You should feel comfortable, listened to and able to ask anything. If something feels rushed or unclear, it is fine to walk away. A very low price can sometimes mean corners have been cut.

How I work

I am a fully qualified and insured aesthetics practitioner. Every treatment begins with a conversation so you understand your options before making any decision. I am always happy to answer these questions and any others you have.
