Bruising after filler: how to reduce it
Bruising is one of the most common side effects of dermal filler, so here are practical tips to lower the chance of it and help it fade.
Bruising is one of the most common side effects after dermal filler. It is usually mild and fades within a week or so. Still, nobody wants a bruise before a wedding or a big work event.
The good news is there are simple things you can do before and after treatment to lower the chance of bruising and help it heal faster.
Why filler can cause bruising
The face has lots of tiny blood vessels. Even with the finest needle or a blunt cannula, one can be nicked during treatment. A small amount of blood then collects under the skin and shows as a bruise.
The lips bruise more easily than most areas because they are so full of blood vessels. Some people also simply bruise more easily than others.
Before your appointment
For around a week before treatment it can help to avoid things that thin the blood or make bruising more likely. Always check with your GP first if you take anything for a medical reason. Never stop prescribed medicine without their advice.
- Avoid alcohol for 24 to 48 hours before
- Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen unless your doctor has prescribed them
- Pause supplements such as fish oil, vitamin E, ginkgo and garlic if it is safe to do so
- Avoid hard exercise on the day of treatment
- Arrive well hydrated
Some people like to take arnica tablets in the days leading up to treatment. The evidence for this is mixed, though many find it helpful.
Plan around events
If you have a special occasion coming up, I usually suggest having filler at least two weeks before. This gives time for any bruising and swelling to settle so you can enjoy your final result.
After your treatment
The first day or two matter most. To keep bruising to a minimum:
- Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours
- Skip the gym, saunas and hot baths for 24 to 48 hours
- Try not to touch or press on the area
- Sleep with your head slightly raised on the first night
- Use a cold compress wrapped in a clean cloth for short spells
Arnica gel can be applied gently once any small puncture marks have closed. Mineral make-up can cover a bruise the day after treatment if you need it.
How long bruising lasts
Most bruises fade within five to ten days. They may change colour from purple to green to yellow as they heal. This is normal.
When to get in touch
Normal bruising is not a cause for worry. Please contact your practitioner straight away if you notice:
- Pain that is getting worse rather than better
- Skin that looks pale, white, blotchy or dusky
- Changes in your vision
- Signs of infection such as heat, spreading redness or fever
These are rare but need prompt attention. I always make sure my clients know how to reach me after treatment.
A careful technique helps too
Experience and technique make a difference. Working slowly, choosing the right tool for each area and applying gentle pressure all help reduce bruising. I talk through all of this at consultation so you know what to expect.
