Profhilo explained

Profhilo is a hyaluronic acid skin booster that hydrates and improves skin laxity. Here is how it works and what a course involves.

Profhilo is one of the best known skin boosters around. It is also one of my favourite treatments to carry out because the results look so natural. Here is a clear guide to what it is and what to expect.

What Profhilo is

Profhilo is an injectable made from a high concentration of hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a natural sugar found in your skin that helps it hold on to water. Our levels drop as we get older. This is one reason skin can start to look dull, crepey or less firm.

Unlike filler, Profhilo is not used to add shape or volume to one spot. Once injected it spreads gently under the skin. It works to hydrate the area and improve skin quality.

What it can help with

Profhilo is often chosen for:

  • Dehydrated or dull skin
  • Mild skin laxity or loss of bounce
  • Fine lines and crepey texture
  • A tired look that does not improve with skincare alone

It is not a facelift. It will not lift heavy jowls or replace lost volume. I will always be honest at your consultation about whether it is the right fit for you.

How the treatment works

For the face, Profhilo is usually placed in five small points on each side. These are known as the BAP points. Using a small number of points means the treatment is quick. Most appointments take around half an hour including preparation.

The injections can sting a little. Most people find it very manageable.

The course

Profhilo is given as a course of two sessions four weeks apart. The second session builds on the first. After the initial course, many people choose a maintenance session every six months or so to keep their results going. This varies from person to person.

After your treatment

You will see small raised bumps at each injection point straight afterwards. These usually settle within a few hours to a day. Some people also have mild swelling, redness or bruising.

I suggest:

  • Avoiding makeup for around 12 hours
  • Skipping strenuous exercise for 24 hours
  • Avoiding saunas and very hot environments for a couple of days
  • Not massaging the area unless advised

As with any injectable, there is a small risk of infection or a reaction. I will talk you through this at your consultation.

When you will see results

Profhilo works gradually. Some people notice their skin looks more hydrated within a couple of weeks. The full effect is usually seen a few weeks after the second session. Results vary depending on your age, skin and lifestyle.

Who should not have Profhilo

Profhilo is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding. It may also not be right if you have active skin infections or certain medical conditions. We will go through your health history before treatment.
