Planning filler around weddings and big events
Planning filler before a wedding or special occasion works best with good timing so any swelling or bruising has settled long before the big day.
Lots of my clients come to me with a date in mind. It might be a wedding, a milestone birthday or a holiday with plenty of photos. Filler can be a lovely way to feel your best for those moments. The key is good timing.
Here is how I suggest planning around a big event so you can relax and enjoy the day.
Why timing matters
Straight after filler it is normal to have some swelling. Lips in particular can look fuller for the first few days than they will once settled. Bruising can also appear and may take a week or so to fade.
The filler also needs time to soften and integrate with your tissue. What you see on day one is not quite the final look. For most people things settle within around two weeks.
A simple timeline
As a general guide I suggest:
- Book a consultation around eight to ten weeks before your event
- Have your treatment at least four weeks before the day if you can
- Allow time for a review around two weeks after treatment
- Leave the final two weeks before the event free of any new treatments
This gives room for swelling and bruising to settle. It also leaves time for a small top-up if we both feel it is needed.
First time having filler
If you have never had filler before, I would give yourself even more time. Everyone responds a little differently. It is nice to know how your skin bruises and how long your swelling lasts before an important occasion.
For first-timers I usually suggest starting with a subtle amount. You can always build on it later. A wedding is not the moment to try a dramatic change for the first time.
Thinking about the whole picture
It helps to plan your other appointments too. Facials, peels and other skin treatments can all leave the skin a little sensitive. I suggest keeping these well spaced from your filler. We can talk through your full plan at your consultation so nothing clashes.
Skin boosters such as Profhilo can also be a nice option before an event. These work gradually over several weeks, so they need to be started well in advance.
Bridal parties and mums of the bride
I often see brides, bridesmaids and mums all wanting to look fresh for the same date. The same timeline applies to everyone. Each person has their own consultation so the plan suits their face and their goals.
Small things that help
A few simple steps can reduce bruising. Your practitioner will give you personal advice, but common tips include:
- Avoid alcohol for a day or two before and after treatment
- Skip strenuous exercise for 24 hours afterwards
- Check with your GP before stopping any prescribed medicine
- Keep your diary clear of other events in the first few days
Keeping it natural
Most people want to look like themselves on their special day, just a little fresher. That is always my aim. Results vary and I will be honest with you about what is realistic.
