How much lip filler do you need: 0.5ml vs 1ml
Choosing between 0.5ml and 1ml of lip filler depends on your lips and goals, so here is what each amount can look like and how to decide.
Many people are surprised by how small a millilitre of filler really is. It is about a fifth of a teaspoon. Even so, in an area as delicate as the lips, a small amount can make a real difference.
Here is a simple guide to what 0.5ml and 1ml can do and how we decide what is right for you.
What 0.5ml can do
Half a millilitre is a lovely starting point for many first-timers. It tends to give a soft, subtle change. Friends may notice you look fresh without spotting that you have had lip filler.
0.5ml can suit you if you would like to:
- Add a hint of volume
- Hydrate the lips and smooth fine lines
- Define the border slightly
- Correct a small difference between sides
- Top up a previous treatment
What 1ml can do
A full millilitre gives more room to work with. It can create a more noticeable increase in volume while still looking natural when placed with care.
1ml may suit you if you:
- Have thinner lips and want a clear but balanced change
- Would like to address shape and volume together
- Have had lip filler before and want to build on it
- Have noticeable volume loss with age
Why more is not always better
It can be tempting to think more filler means a better result. In reality adding too much in one go can stretch the tissue and look unnatural. It can also raise the chance of swelling and lumps.
My approach is to use only as much as your lips need. Sometimes that means using less than the full syringe. Up to 1ml at a time keeps things balanced and safe.
Factors that affect how much you need
- Your natural lip size and shape
- Your goals and the look you prefer
- Your face shape and the balance with your nose and chin
- Whether you have had filler before
- How your skin and tissue respond
Building results gradually
If you would like a fuller look, it is often better to build over two appointments a few weeks apart. This lets the first treatment settle so we can see the true result before deciding on more. It also gives your lips time to adjust.
What to expect afterwards
Whatever amount you have, your lips will look bigger for the first few days because of swelling. This is normal. The final result usually shows at around two weeks. Bruising and tenderness are common and usually settle within a week. Results vary but lip filler often lasts around six to twelve months.
Deciding together
You do not need to know the answer before your appointment. At your consultation we look at your lips, talk about the look you love and agree a plan. If 0.5ml is enough, I will tell you.
If you are curious about how much lip filler would suit you, I would be happy to help you decide. Book a free consultation with Lucy in Addlestone and we can plan a result that feels right.
