Lip shapes and how lip filler is tailored to you

No two pairs of lips are the same, so here is how lip filler can be planned around your natural lip shape for a result that suits you.

Lips come in all shapes and sizes. Some are naturally full, some are thin, some are fuller on the bottom and some have a sharp Cupid's bow. There is no right or wrong shape.

Good lip filler is about working with what you already have. A result that looks lovely on one person can look out of place on someone else.

Common lip shapes

Thin lips

Thin lips can benefit from gentle volume and a little definition. A small amount can make a noticeable difference while still looking soft.

Uneven lips

Many people have one side slightly fuller than the other. Careful placement can help balance this.

Top-heavy or bottom-heavy lips

For most faces a bottom lip that is a little fuller than the top lip looks natural. If the top lip is much thinner, filler can help bring the two into proportion. If the top lip is already fuller, we may focus on the lower lip instead.

Flat or undefined borders

Some lips have a soft edge that has faded with age. A fine line of filler along the border can bring back definition.

Downturned corners

Corners that turn down can make you look sad or tired at rest. Supporting the corners can lift the overall look of the mouth.

What I look at during a consultation

Before planning any treatment I look at:

  • The size and shape of each lip
  • The balance between your upper and lower lip
  • Your Cupid's bow and lip border
  • How your lips move when you talk and smile
  • How your lips relate to your nose and chin
  • Your teeth and the shape of your jaw

The lips do not exist on their own. A change that suits your lips needs to suit your whole face too.

Different techniques for different goals

There is no single way to treat lips. Depending on your goals I may place filler to:

  • Add soft volume to the body of the lip
  • Define the border
  • Lift the corners
  • Improve projection when seen from the side
  • Hydrate the lips and smooth fine lines

Most treatments use a mix of these. The amount is kept up to 1ml so the result stays balanced.

Bring photos but keep an open mind

Photos of lips you like can be really helpful. They show me the style you are drawn to. It is worth knowing that your lips may not be able to look exactly like someone else's, because the starting shape is different. I will explain honestly what is possible.

What to expect afterwards

Swelling is normal and is often more noticeable the next morning. It usually settles within a few days. Bruising is also common. The final shape shows after about two weeks. Results vary and lip filler usually lasts around six to twelve months.

Building gradually

If you are new to filler, starting with a small amount is often wise. You can always add more later. This lets you get used to your new lips and keeps the result looking like you.
