How long does dermal filler last
A clear guide to how long dermal filler usually lasts in the lips, cheeks and chin plus the factors that make results fade faster or slower.
This is one of the questions I am asked most often. The honest answer is that it depends. Different areas of the face, different products and different bodies all break filler down at their own pace.
Here is a simple guide to what most people can expect.
How filler breaks down
Most fillers used today are made from hyaluronic acid. Your body already produces this substance and has natural enzymes that slowly break it down. Over months the filler is absorbed and the area gradually returns towards how it looked before.
This is good news. It means results are not permanent and you are not committed to a look for life.
Typical timeframes by area
These are rough ranges. Your own results may be shorter or longer.
- Lips: usually around 6 to 12 months
- Cheeks: often 12 to 18 months
- Chin: often 12 to 18 months
The lips tend to fade fastest because we use them constantly to talk, eat, drink and smile. The cheeks and chin move less and are usually treated with firmer fillers, so they tend to last longer.
What affects how long filler lasts
The product
Fillers come in different thicknesses. Softer gels are used in delicate areas like the lips. Firmer gels are used to give structure to the cheeks and chin. Firmer products generally last longer.
Your metabolism
Some people simply break filler down faster than others. People who exercise a lot sometimes notice their filler fades a little sooner.
Lifestyle
Smoking, lots of sun exposure and general wear on the skin can all affect how long results look their best. Good skincare and daily SPF help protect your investment.
How much is used
A very small amount may fade sooner than a fuller treatment. With repeat treatments some people find results hold for longer.
Is filler gone when it looks gone
Not always. Research suggests that some hyaluronic acid filler can stay in the tissue for longer than the visible result. This is one reason I prefer a careful, gradual approach and do not top up more often than needed.
When to have a top-up
There is no fixed rule. Many people come back when they notice the shape softening, rather than waiting for it to fade completely. A top-up is often a smaller amount than the first treatment.
It is best to leave at least a few weeks after any treatment before adding more. This allows swelling to settle so we can see the true result.
Keeping results natural
A good practitioner will tell you when you do not need more filler. Overfilling over time can change the shape of the face in a way that does not look natural. I would always rather you leave looking like yourself.
