Chin filler and why the chin matters for your profile

Why a small or receding chin can change the balance of your whole face and how chin filler can bring gentle structure to your profile.

Most of us look at our faces straight on in the mirror. We rarely see ourselves from the side. Yet the chin plays a big part in how balanced the face looks, especially in photos and in profile.

Chin filler is a treatment many people have never considered. Once they understand what it can do, it often makes a lot of sense.

Why the chin matters

The chin anchors the lower third of the face. When it is in proportion with the nose and lips, the face tends to look harmonious. When the chin is small or set back, other features can look larger than they really are.

A weak chin can make:

  • The nose look more prominent
  • The lips look as if they stick out
  • The jawline look softer or less defined
  • The area under the chin look fuller

Some people are born with a smaller chin. For others it changes with age as bone is slowly lost from the jaw. Either way, small changes here can make a big difference to the overall picture.

What chin filler can do

Chin filler uses a firmer hyaluronic acid gel designed to give structure. Placed over the bone, it can bring the chin forward a little or add some length. It can also soften a dimpled or puckered look on the chin and help it look smoother.

The goal is not a strong, square chin unless that suits you. For most people the aim is gentle balance so that nothing stands out. Friends might say you look well without being able to say why.

A quick way to check your profile

Take a photo of yourself from the side with a relaxed face. Imagine a straight line from the tip of your nose to your chin. In a balanced profile the lips usually sit just behind or touching this line. If the chin sits well back from it, chin filler may be worth a conversation.

This is only a rough guide. Every face is different and there is no perfect measurement that suits everyone.

The treatment

We begin with a consultation where I look at your face from the front and the side. We talk about what you would like to change and I will explain what is realistic. If it suits you, treatment usually takes around 30 minutes.

Most chin fillers contain a local anaesthetic. The area can feel a bit tender afterwards. Swelling and bruising are possible and usually settle within a week or so. Rare complications can happen with any filler. I will go through these with you properly before we start.

How long chin filler lasts

Because firmer fillers are used and the chin does not move as much as the lips, results often last 12 to 18 months for many people. Some find it lasts longer. Top-ups are usually smaller than the first treatment.

Chin filler and other treatments

The chin is often treated together with the lips as part of profile balancing. Small amounts in both areas can bring the whole lower face into proportion. If you have tension in your chin muscle, anti-wrinkle treatment may also be discussed at a face-to-face consultation with a prescriber to see if it is suitable.

If you have ever felt your profile looks a little out of balance, I would be happy to take a look with you. Book a free consultation with Lucy in Addlestone and we can talk through your options in a relaxed way.
