The lip flip explained
A lip flip uses a tiny amount of anti-wrinkle treatment to gently relax the upper lip. Here is how it works and how it differs from lip filler.
The lip flip has become a popular request, partly thanks to social media. It is a subtle treatment and it is quite different from lip filler. Here is a clear explanation of what it involves and what it can and cannot do.
What a lip flip is
A lip flip uses a very small amount of anti-wrinkle treatment placed just above the upper lip. It relaxes part of the muscle that surrounds the mouth, called the orbicularis oris.
When this muscle relaxes slightly, the upper lip can roll outwards a little. This shows a touch more of the pink part of the lip, especially when you smile. Nothing is added to the lip. The change comes from how the muscle sits.
Who it may suit
- People whose upper lip seems to disappear or thin out when they smile
- People who want a very subtle change without adding volume
- Those with fine vertical lines above the lip, sometimes called smokers' lines
- People who show a little more gum than they would like when smiling
Smokers' lines are not only caused by smoking. Repeated pursing of the lips, such as drinking through straws, can play a part. Relaxing the muscle can help soften these lines.
Lip flip or lip filler
A lip flip does not add volume or change the shape of the lip at rest very much. It gives a gentle lift to the upper lip, mostly noticeable when you smile.
Dermal filler, on the other hand, adds volume and can define the lip shape. Some people choose one, some choose the other and some combine them. Your consultation will help work out what suits your lips and what you hope to achieve.
What to expect
Only a few tiny injections are needed. The treatment is quick and most people find it comfortable.
Results usually begin to show after a few days and settle by about two weeks. Because such a small dose is used, a lip flip tends to wear off sooner than other areas. Results often last around six to eight weeks, though this varies.
A free review appointment around two weeks after treatment is included.
Possible side effects
Relaxing the lip muscle slightly can change how the lips work for a short time. Some people find it a little harder to:
- Drink through a straw
- Whistle or pronounce certain sounds
- Keep liquid in the mouth when rinsing
These effects are usually mild and settle as the treatment wears off. Bruising, swelling and tenderness are also possible. Very occasionally the smile can look uneven for a while.
A lip flip may not be ideal if you rely heavily on your lips for work, for example if you play a wind instrument or sing professionally. This is something to mention at consultation.
Is it right for you
Anti-wrinkle injections are a prescription-only medicine. Suitability is always decided at a face-to-face consultation with a prescriber. Results vary and no particular outcome can be promised.
